Brothier Coalgan Haemostatic Gauze Wick is a sterile medical device made from pure plant-derived calcium alginate fibres. This 4 cm wick is specifically designed for local haemostasis of cutaneous and mucosal bleeding, supporting the management of epistaxis (nosebleeds), oral haemorrhages and post-puncture wounds.
Ion exchange and coagulation kinetics
The mechanism of action relies on the biochemical properties of calcium alginate. On contact with blood, the fibres release calcium ions (Ca2+) in exchange for sodium ions present in the exudate. This ionic release helps activate the local coagulation cascade, promoting platelet aggregation and fibrin clot formation. Simultaneously, this exchange triggers progressive gel formation in the fibres, maintaining the wound in a stabilised moist environment that supports physiological healing processes and prevents adhesion to newly formed tissue.
Biocompatibility and atraumatic removal
Engineered for maximum biological tolerance, the Coalgan wick contains no irritating chemical components, making it suitable for infants, children, pregnant women and patients with constitutional or acquired haemostatic disorders. Its gelled structure ensures atraumatic, pain-free removal, minimising the risk of rebleeding from disruption of the healing bud. Brothier offers a structured emergency solution to stabilise mild haemorrhages and protect fragile mucous membranes, meeting clinical safety requirements for both domestic and professional use.

Excellent productA friend in France recommended this product and as my husband is on two anti-coagulants due to stents being fitted last May, I have found Coalgan invaluable in stemming any bleeding that occurs.
