Interactions and contraindications:
Contains caffeine: do not combine with stimulants, particularly foods that also contain caffeine. Seek medical advice when exceeding the NRVs.
Not suitable during pregnancy or breastfeeding, or for children. Do not use in cases of insomnia, hypertension, gastric or duodenal ulcers, or heart problems.
Caffeine may interact with the following medicines:
- Analgesics, paracetamol and acetylsalicylic acid (aspirin): it increases their effects and may increase their absorption, with a risk of liver toxicity.
- Clozapine: it increases the effects and toxicity of this neuroleptic.
- Monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs): when combined with these medicines, it may cause tachycardia, hypotension, hyperthermia, encephalopathy and rhabdomyolysis.
- Anticoagulants and antiplatelet medicines: it increases the risk of bleeding.
- Lithium: it reduces the blood concentration of lithium.
- Alendronate: do not take caffeine for 2 hours before or after taking this medicine.
- Sedatives and tranquillisers (benzodiazepines): reduced effects.
- Diabetes treatments: it may cause blood glucose levels to vary.
- Antacids: it reduces their effectiveness.
- Nicotine: it may increase the risk of nicotine dependence.
- Diuretics: it increases their effects.
- Central nervous system stimulants (ephedrine): it increases adverse effects.
- Theophylline and bronchodilators: risk of cardiac adverse effects.
- Cimetidine: it increases the adverse effects of caffeine.
