The Whortleberry or "Airelle myrtille", (Ericaceae family) is known as Cornflower in Canada. It is a deciduous perennial sub-shrub whose fruit are globular, fleshy blue berries. It is particularly abundant in the siliceous undergrowth of mountainous regions in the northern hemisphere (in France: Vosges, Massif Central and even Massif Armoricain).
Characteristics: Whortleberries are renowned for their mild, slightly acidic, sweet taste. In the culinary sense, a distinction is made between bilberries (blue and rather sweet) and cranberries (red and rather tart).
