How do I use a nasal douche?

Using a nasal douche is a simple and effective method of cleansing the nasal passages, relieving congestion and improving breathing. It can be particularly useful in cases of colds, sinusitis or Allegy. Start by preparing a saline solution by mixing a quarter teaspoon of non-iodised salt and a pinch of bicarbonate of soda in 250 ml of lukewarm water. Make sure the salt is completely dissolved. Then fill the nasal douche with the prepared salt solution. Nasal showers are generally available in jars, syringes or bottles. Lean over a washbasin and tilt your head slightly forward. Gently turn your head to one side so that one ear is pointing towards the floor and the other towards the ceiling. To irrigate your nasal passages, gently insert the nozzle of the Shower into your upper nostril and breathe through your mouth. Apply gentle pressure to force the saline solution through the upper nostril and let it drain out through the lower nostril. The saline solution may also flow down your throat; it is normal to feel a slight salty taste. If necessary, adjust the angle of the head to improve drainage. Repeat the process for the other nostril, turning the head to the other side. When you have finished nasal irrigation, sit up and blow gently into a handkerchief to remove any residual saline solution and secretions.
