GABA or gamma aminobutyric acid is a relaxing brain neurotransmitter essential for mood balance.

GABA is synthesised by the body from glutamic acid, under the influence of glutamic acid decarboxylase (GAD) using vitamin B6 as a cofactor, in the presence of vitamin C.
Stored in the granules of presynaptic terminals and released into the synaptic cleft, it acts on specific GABA-A and GABA-B receptors located on the post-synaptic fibre.
Some of the released GABA is recaptured by the neuronal presynaptic terminals.
